Team GB - Our Care in Summer

Summer, sun, sunshine... we all enjoy the good weather and the abundant sun during the warm summer days. But the constant sun and rare rain not only strain the environment, but also our four-legged friends.

Summer heat requires different care than in winter, so in this article, we focus on the right horse care during hot temperatures.

A Refreshment on Hot Days

From about 27 degrees, our sport partners enjoy a refreshing shower. When it goes above 30 degrees, we go to the stable several times a day to refresh our ponies.

Ideally, use lukewarm water to protect the circulation. If you don’t have lukewarm water available, it’s important to start at the leg farthest from the heart.

Begin slowly with the right hind leg, then all other legs, and finally shower the horse’s body.

Little tip: Horses enjoy a pleasant spray rain on the saddle area.

On very hot days, training should be moved to the cooler morning or evening hours. If an important competition takes place in the midday heat, slow warming up is very important.

Fresh cool water should be available in sufficient amounts, and in between, horses should always be cooled down with a cool sponge.

After the test, don’t spray immediately; let the horses’ circulation relax a bit.

Hoof Care in Summer

The right Hoof Care in summer is also an important point. Hooves often tend to dry out, so we should care for them with the right products.

We like to use the Sommerhufgel from Effol, which provides optimal moisture. Another little tip from us: olive oil (also provides moisture for the hooves).

Furthermore, horses have dry muzzles, which we care for daily with udder cream.

We recommend the Maulbutter from Effol, available in delicious scented varieties like apple and banana.

We hope our tips help you get your horses through the summer well. By the way, you can find all products from Effol here.
