Bit discs for protection and shortening long bits
Bit discs have several functions:
- Shortening bits that are too longIf the bit is a little too long, you can shorten it with the help of a bit disc without damaging the bridle bit. The bit discs are simply pulled over the ends, creating the correct length between the two ends.
- Preventing injuriesIn addition, bit discs are also used with loose ring snaffle bits. There is sometimes a risk that the horse's corners of the mouth get pinched by the rings. In this function, the bit discs are mounted between the corner of the mouth and the ring.
Furthermore, bit discs can also prevent damage caused by bitswith loose, movable bit rings, as well as prevent the bit from being pulled through the horse's mouth. Pelham straps to soften the rider's hand on the bit
With the help of a Pelham strap, you can somewhat soften the effect of the rider's hand on sharp bits. They are attached directly to the Pelham; a leverage bit that is used in the bridle of riding horses.

The chin chain as bit accessory for horses
The use of a chin chain is common, for example, with the Weymouth bridle or the Pelham. It serves to limit the rotation of the bit in the horse's mouth so that the bitdoes not have too strong an effect on the poll and the corner of the mouth. Instead, the chin chain redirects the pull to the chin and tongue. To avoid pressure points, you can buy a black chin chain pad from our manufacturer Sprenger in our shop. The pad is even approved for tests with a prescribed Weymouth bridle.
The right bit care with Sprenger Diamond Paste
So that the bitcan be used for a long time on your horse, you should clean it regularly. This applies in particular to Aurigan bits. These horse bits have a very high copper content, the sweet taste of which encourages horses to chew. The horse's saliva oxidises the material and forms a natural patina on the surface, which in turn promotes chewing in horses.
For a thorough cleaning of this bit, we recommend the Diamond Paste from our manufacturer Sprenger. This restores the bitto its original shine and makes it look almost new. The paste contains a special polishing compound that is completely non-toxic. Under no circumstances should you work on the sensitive material with a wire brush. This could create deep scratches in the bit. The paste contains micro-fine polishing particles, is skin-friendly, food-safe, as well as non-toxic and acid-free. It is also suitable for cleaning spurs, stirrups and other fittings.
